This week has been tough. Everything had been going pretty smoothly up until this week, with the exception of the rotating excitement, anxiety and uncertainty which I explained in previous posts. This week I hit some road bumps and they of course happened all at once.
First was a message from a manufacturer which told me the initial purchase to get the ball rolling was a huge capital investment of $50,000+ which was to be paid upfront. This was a shock but it wasn't the end of the world, I began to look for ways to solve this problem. Crowdfunding is a great resource and very easy to develop a campaign. Building this will also help you to develop content that you will need for your website later on.
Second was the manufacturer telling me that the industry was very strict and I required a license for each product in my product line. I don't know how I missed this with all of my initial research. This process is quite extensive and it was not easy finding all the proper forms required to begin the licensing. Maybe this is an opportunity for someone else out there to organize all the government documents and forms for easy access.
Third bump was when I reached out to the manufacturer once more and I was then told that they were over capacity and could not take on anymore private label business. They suggested I try the trade business they offer and sell their products instead. I thought for a while and had decided this might be the best option considering the hoops I was going to have to jump through to move forward any other way.
I thought about this for a while, trying to rework my expectations to see if I could still end up at the same place down the road. I had heard from a mentor of mine, a professor from college and I think that writing to him about the issues helped me to organize them and make things seem clearer. This was aided by a talk with my wife where she reinforced "If it were easy everyone would do it." This got me back on track and I am going to stick it out through the licensing process and sell my own product rather than someone else's
Keep this in mind. If it was easy everyone would do it and The path to success isn't straight and clear of bumps and detours. You need to take some time to talk with your support system whether it is a mentor, a girlfriend or wife, or a close friend or family member. These people will look out for your best interest and sometimes give you some tough love at just the right time. Stay true to yourself and don't make sacrifices for happiness and achieving your goals.
It is 8:30pm and I just finished doing another nearly 4 hours of work for my new business. It really goes back to the comment I made back in the first week, the time is getting put in, it just happens to be different each day including weekends. Tonight my wife is out for the night and I am home hanging out with my dog and working away. I have some music playing in the background and the TV is off. I always knew watching TV was a waste of time.
It has been fun joking with my friends after a late hockey game ending at 11:15pm before hitting the showers. They would say it is past their bedtime and needed to rush home as they have a long day of work ahead of them and they don't want to get up so early. I always say "I don't wanna wake up so early either" To which I get a response of "Shut up" or "We get it, you're funemployed" What they don't see is that I am up around 8am most days and getting to work. I do eat breakfast without rushing and I take the dog for a walk before I open my computer but then it is down to business. This week I have put in more hours than the average fully employed person, putting in 12+ hours on more than one occasion. As I mentioned before it just doesn't feel like work when it is for yourself. I get to spend everyday working on MY goals and that is amazing. I spend less time in front of the TV or on Facebook and it feels great.

The best part so far is I'm enjoying it. I don't hate my life when I step into my office which has been my living room or lately my back deck. So many jobs that people have these days could be done at home. Not only saving time and money but increasing the enjoyment level in peoples lives. I know if I was doing data entry all day in an office (and I have) I would hate it. More people should push to work jobs like this from home. Spend some time with your wife, kids or family pet rather than commuting between 1 and 2 hours per day each way.
OR get off your butt and start a company of your own.
As of today I have sent the application for a business license and I have registered the name of my company. I don't want to jump the gun here so I will fill you guys in a little more about the company next week.
Take Care,
Brian
